I tried OpenClaw, NanoClaw - all sorts of claws. Eventually I settled on Hermes agent (at least for now). It works well and does all the things you basically need, plus I like that cyberpunk aesthetic. I wired it up with Honcho (runs locally) so it doesn’t play the fool trying to remember past convos.
Hermes lives on my Raspberry Pi 4 and is attached to a 64x64 LED matrix. All the hardware is baked into an enclosure that I printed based on a 3D render made with Codex (by the way, Codex or other capable LLM + OpenSCAD is a really nice combo for making trivial STLs). The whole setup still kinda sucks - my grid diffuser isn’t so good and I didn’t get that real-ish pixel view, but as usual, a half-baked live project is better than one abandoned for not being perfect.
The LED is controlled by a web server on the Pi via MCP/Skill by Hermes - so it can send me GIFs, images generated via Nano Banana/Python, or just text. In idle state it’s just the clock and weather (thanks MetService for the generous free API).
In the end the whole setup with the LED is completely useless (at least for now). Although Hermes will show me a celebration GIF if any order comes from https://sweetest-batch.co.nz so feel free to try it out.
