Sweetest Batch goes e-commerce
A “20-minute adventure” adding Stripe to an Astro bakery site that took a couple of months.
At the end of last year, I set out to make a small bakery’s website ecommerce-ready.
The obvious Shopify route seemed way too easy for me, so I decided to upgrade the Astro website I’d made for the bakery earlier with Stripe integration. It was supposed to be a “20-minute adventure.”
So, a couple of months later, I finally released the Sweetest Batch e-commerce version:
Here is a snapshot of the things I needed to take care of:
- Astro and Stripe integration on top of Cloudflare Workers hosting (had some fun times with SSR and Astro 6 beta adoption)
- Sanity and Stripe integration – making sure Sanity acts as a product catalog while I’m finishing the bakery management system app for that
- All those SEO bells and whistles – Google Analytics, Google Merchant Center, Google Search Console, product metadata, sitemaps, content optimization, etc.
- Emails automation via Mailgun
- Readiness with NZ Post, labeling, packaging, etc.
- AI agentic shopping readiness (still WIP) – LLM-optimized FAQ, llms.txt, universal commerce protocol, agentic endpoints
And much more…
So would I choose Shopify or WooCommerce over custom solutions if I started over? Probably no – it was totally worth it. The experience I gained is precious, plus now I have a pretty decent base for the next project.
I’m pretty sure there are still plenty of bugs, so if you find one, please let me know! 😄
